Late August

John Bohrn

"Let me enjoy
this late-summer day of my heart
while the leaves are still green
and I won't look so close
as to see that first tint
of pale yellow slowly creep in.
I will cease endless running
and then look to the sky
ask the sun to embrace me
and then hope she won't tell
of tomorrows less long than today.
Let me spend just this time
in the slow-cooling glow
of warm afternoon light
and I'd think
I will still have the strength
for just one more
last fling of my heart."

Well, I didn´t want to believe it, but Michael was probably right: July is the month with the highest precipitation! Under normal circumstances we - as well as frogs, Sticklebacks and other creatures- would eagerly await the irrigation of our ditches. We certainly won´t have to do that this year! On the contrary - the trenches are full to overflowing, and even the swimming pool had to be partly drained more than once. However, because up here on the coast the weather quickly changes, we never had days of constant downpour, so most locals and visitors still enjoyed the month of July.

This was very apparent at this year´s "Shrimp Boat Regatta"  from 10 - 12 July in Fedderwardersiel! There was plenty going on, despite the occasional heavy rain! Due to the high tide and strong winds, a few of the booth operators close to the docks got wet feet. However, vendors and visitors alike were not deterred and used rubber boots, barefeet or podium as alternatives! Soon after the tide went out all stalls were back in business and visitors were able to choose from the extensive range of catering, gifts and entertainment. A special highlight was the "Shrimp Peeling Contest", which was won by Margret Hahnel. Since the contest has become very popular, there were significantly more applications than seats for the championship this year. So Dennis Westphal, CEO of the Fishing Cooperative Butjadingen, determined that he will supply more tables for even more participants next year. But not every participant is eager to win the contest and title. What I've observed looked more like a "Eat-as many-shrimp-as-you-can-before-the-contest-starts"! Well, they are very yummy ;-)!

Enjoy the sun and summer fun in August
