General Info, Tide Calendar, Tossens Butjadingen Lower Saxony Germany September 2010

Welcome to Butjadingen in August!

Yes - we are still waiting for precious rain - for weeks the dark clouds have constantly passed us by! For once we are not complaining - the children had a great summer holiday and the many visitors who still come to Butjadingen`s beaches can enjoy their well deserved vacation. The events calendar is still filled with great offers of entertainment and events for adults and children and the National Park is ideal for swimming or hiking across the mudflats. Wimps like me appreciate the warm water temperatures that go along with the incoming tide and my children have had a few mud-slinging contests/ fights at low tide - good job there are showers at the beach ;-) They even did a long hike across the mudflats all the way to a sandbank, where they got close to a couple of seals sprawled in the sun!!

Do not forget to check our tide calendar! Since we always get the same questions: h/l plus time = the lowest / highest level is reached. After that time the tide will turn and the water will either retreat or come back. You can swim in the sea starting at around three hours before the specified time of high tide - and then you can watch with amazement how quickly it disappears  ;-).
So - get into the sea before it's gone again!

We wish all our visitors a lot of fun and sunshine!

Late August

Let me enjoy
this late-summer day of my heart
while the leaves are still green
and I won't look so close
as to see that first tint
of pale yellow slowly creep in.
I will cease endless running
and then look to the sky
ask the sun to embrace me
and then hope she won't tell
of tomorrows less long than today.
Let me spend just this time
in the slow-cooling glow
of warm afternoon light
and I'd think
I will still have the strength
for just one more
last fling of my heart."

Here in Butjadingen the season is in full swing! Sunshine, beaches, entertainment and sea - we have it all and for family friendly prices. How about a hike across the mud flats in the "National Park Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer"? Depending on the tides, there are fun, educational field trips into the mud flats almost daily - some of which are specifically geared for smaller children. For examples you can check on dates and descriptions at www.wattwanderung.de.

Are your children mad about football? Here in Butjadingen they can take a course at the "Fußballschule am Meer - soccer at the beach. The first course starts on July 13th and our three "big" kids will be there this summer! The individual courses are led by well-known football personalities: Bundesliga player and coach at VSK Osterholz - Scharmbeck Günter Hermann, A - Junioren Bundesliga coach Jörn Heins, Frank "Otze" Ordenewitz - since 2005 chief scout for junior talent Werder Bremen and last but not least, Dieter Zembski, who has years of experience playing for SV Werder Bremen and Eintracht Braunschweig. Maybe my children will learn a little more ball control so my flower beds won´t suffer so much in the future!

All our visitors: Enjoy surfing and a nice holiday season ...

Holundersekt - Elderflower champagneas the elder everywhere blooms so beautifully - here is a super simple recipe for

Recipe for Elderflower Champagne:
  • 10 elderblossoms / whole umbel
  • 10 l Water
  • 1kg sugar
  • 1 unsprayed lemon
  • 50g citric acid
  • a few grains of rice
Use an old enamel or glazed container if you have one. I simply take a clean bucket and dissolve the sugar and the citric acid in one liter of warm water. Add the remaining water, the umbels, slices of lemon and a teaspoon of rice (uncooked of course) to it. Cover and keep in a warm place for five days (I leave it on the sunny window sill), stirring it once a day. Then pour through a fine sieve and fill into bottles. I always take the slightly firmer 1l soda bottles made of plastic. It is important to close these really tight - otherwise you will end up with the elderberry champagne on the ceiling! The champagne should then be stored in a cool place for at least 14 days. At the first tasting take caution when opening - by now the beverage is carbonated, the bubbles rise up like they do with real champagne -delicious!

Incidentally, I still have elderberry champagne in the cellar from 2006 - which is not as sparkly any more, but still tastes really good!
